Shiatsu, a traditional Japanese therapy, is also used in Turkey. Word wise it
means "pressure with fingers". It is applied using finger, hand and elbow, but
this depends on the needs of a person. It originates from 20th century Japan
as a synthesis of different hand based therapies and later it is accepted in the
medicine. It is based on China based acupuncture and traditional Japanese
massages. This therapy activates the body's self-healing ability and aims to
repair the disrupted body balance.
Application
During a shiatsu séance, you have to wear comfortable clothing. Before a
séance one should not eat heavily or use alcohol. Drinking plenty of water
after the séance helps the body flow and leads to comfort. |

It is also advised not to participate in heavy or stressful activities. Shiatsu is applied on a soft bed while being dressed. If it is not possible to lie down on the bed, it can also be applied while sitting on a chair. One shiatsu séance takes about 1 hour, and 15 minutes of this hour is spent on talking. During chatting, the therapist tries to diagnose the illness or the problem by asking specific questions. After this short chat, the therapist knows on which part of the body to focus. The second step is to justify the diagnosis by applying the shiatsu on the abdominal area. This gives clues about the illness, and the next step depends on one's needs. During the massage, pressure is applied on acupuncture areas, organs are being stretched, and joints are exercised. These exercises differ per person and they might also differ per séance for the same person.
What does it heal?
According to the Eastern medicine, the imbalance of our body energy flow causes illnesses. This imbalance manifests
itself in different organs of our body. Muscle tightness, acidic residues, hormonal irregularities can be examples of
these symptoms. Shiatsu, like in other Eastern originated therapies, is used to keep a regular energy flow. It is said
that shiatsu has a positive effect against chronic and acute illnesses. Shiatsu can also help to improve the life quality
of the patients who suffer from chronic illnesses. After a shiatsu séance you will not only feel restful, but also
energetic and fresh.
First of all, shiatsu eliminates tension and stiffness by increasing the tightness of the muscle tissue. Other positive
effects of shiatsu include :
- Helps to reduce headaches and back pains
- Increases the blood circulation
- Regulates the working of inner organs
- Treats rheumatism, arthritis and digestion problems
- Regulates sleeping
- Gives a mental relaxation
- If performed regularly, it gives a correct posture to the body
Shiatsu therapist Aysin Albayrak states: "To have shiatsu massage before the illnesses appear, actually prevents illnesses ". So, it is wise to go to a therapist before the illness manifests itself by creating symptoms. |
